Our Purpose
Most simply stated, our purpose is to grow as....
a community of individuals and families,
connecting with God,
to change the world.
- We understand this to involve providing a fellowship where...
- individuals and families can grow together
as students (disciples) of Jesus Christ,
empowered by the Holy Spirit,
to live in the reality of God's reign (Kingdom of God),
for the sake of the world.
Our purpose is centered in the "Kingdom of God"
At the center of understanding our life lies Christ's proclamation of the "Kingdom of God." The Kingdom reflects God's reign-- His control. Scripture describes for us how humankind sought to "be like God" and in doing so, we were separated from God in a state of sin and shame, and came under the control of the "kingdom of darkness." The Scriptures go forward declaring and describing the ultimate reign of God being revealed. God declares His sovereign reign in establishing a covenant with Abraham to raise up a nation (Israel) out of which He would bless all nations (through the Messiah). The nature of this covenant reflects the unconditional and benevolent royal grant, which kings made to those they had conquered and now reigned over. Not surprisingly, the Prophets were gripped by visions of God in His majesty as King. (Isaiah 6:1ff; Ezekiel 1:25ff; Daniel 7:9ff)
Christ came proclaiming that the Kingdom of God was "at hand".... breaking into the world. He "came to destroy the works of the devil." (1 John 3:8) He "broke the power of death and showed us the way to everlasting life through the Good News (of the Kingdom)." (2 Tim. 1:10; cf. 1 Cor. 15:26)
Christ calls us to live in the reality of God's Kingdom reign, which involves:
- Being students (disciples) of the Kingdom Life
- Being community which represents the Kingdom Life
- Being missionaries who communicate the Kingdom Life
- Being empowered by the Holy Spirit of God to enable the Kingdom Life.
